Newport Beach Maternity Photographer | Terri & Stephen at Crystal Cove
Terri and Stephen’s maternity session at Crystal Cove in Newport Beach gave us a little bit of everything. From sunlit coastal views and portraits along the water to dramatic cliffside landscapes and pastel skies at sunset, we were able to capture a lot of variety in one evening. They’re expecting their first baby any day now, so the timing couldn’t have been better.
A Coastal Maternity Session at Crystal Cove in Newport Beach
One of the reasons I love photographing maternity and family sessions at Crystal Cove is the variety of scenery within such a relatively small area. We started along the coastal overlooks, taking advantage of the warm afternoon sunlight before making our way down to the beach for portraits along the water.
From there, we explored a few of the surrounding cliffs and elevated areas for some wider compositions. I love incorporating photographs where my subjects appear smaller within the landscape. It adds a sense of scale and gives the gallery a completely different perspective from the traditional close-up portraits.
By the end of the session, the sun had dropped below the horizon, leaving behind some beautiful pastel pink and blue skies. Those final sunset photographs ended up being some of my favorites from the evening.
Why I Love Crystal Cove for Orange County Maternity Photography
Crystal Cove State Beach, located between Newport Beach and Laguna Beach, is one of my favorite Orange County locations for maternity photography.
The combination of coastal cliffs, open beach, natural rock formations, and ocean views makes it possible to create a gallery with quite a bit of variety without having to change locations.
I especially love how the landscape allows for both intimate portraits and wider, more editorial compositions. Having that balance gives a gallery more depth and makes it feel less like a collection of individual portraits and more like a story of the evening.
For Terri and Stephen, we were fortunate to have beautiful light throughout their entire session, finishing with those soft, cotton-candy skies that Southern California occasionally delivers.
