One of the things that made this Huntington Beach maternity session with Reeva and Mark especially fun to create was how much variety we were able to capture within one evening, which is one of the reasons I love photographing maternity sessions along the Orange County coast.

We began up on the cliffs, where the ocean stretched endlessly behind them and gave us that wide, open coastal backdrop so many families are drawn to when booking a Huntington Beach maternity photographer. From there, we moved down toward the sand, incorporating one of Huntington Beach’s iconic lifeguard towers for a classic Southern California feel, then finished along a quiet trail lined with green foliage and seasonal blooms that gave their gallery an entirely different mood and texture.

That shift in scenery within one location is what adds so much depth to a maternity gallery. It allows for images that feel layered, intentional, and diverse without ever needing to travel far.

The light also kept evolving in the best way throughout the evening, which always pushes me creatively as an artist. We had soft coastal sunset light, a few moments where the sun broke through just enough to create beautiful sunbeams, and later that dreamy diffused glow that Huntington Beach often gives right before sunset.

Being able to work through different backdrops, angles, and changing light like this is one of the reasons Orange County maternity sessions can feel so rich and full, and it made this gallery especially fun to create.

This Huntington Beach maternity session is a beautiful reminder of why the Southern California coastline is one of the most sought after locations for maternity photography. As an Orange County maternity photographer, I love incorporating the natural beauty of our coastal landscapes, and this session offered the best variety, blooming green foliage along the cliffs, soft ocean light against the reflective sky, iconic turquoise Huntington Beach lifeguard towers, and playful moments along the shoreline. Mimi and her daughter Mia shared such a sweet connection as they walked through the coastal greenery and splashed along the water, creating a collection of images that beautifully capture this season of motherhood.

Sessions like these hold a quiet kind of meaning. A moment in pregnancy where you are still the mother of one, but you are already holding space for two. Your toddler may not fully understand what is coming, but she can sense that something is changing. The photographs from this season carry a tenderness that only exists in this brief window of time, the space between what a family is today and what it is about to become.

Six months is made of details.

The kind families do not always think to document because they are small and ordinary and happening every day.

The chubby rolls at the wrists.

The way she dangles comfortably off her mama’s hip.

Learning her own neck support.

The tiny saliva bubbles she makes when she pushes air through her lips, so proud of what she just discovered.

As an Orange County baby photographer, this is one of my favorite stages and one families often skip. They photograph newborns and then suddenly it is the first birthday.

But 6 months is magic.

Helen was once a newborn in front of my lens. Wrapped up, sleepy, brand new. And now she is grabbing at her mama’s hair , making steady eye contact and full of the biggest smiles.

These in home baby sessions in Newport Beach are my favorite because they feel real. Feeding moments in the kitchen. Mom pacing and soothing her around the house. A bottle mid morning in soft window light. Everyday motherhood documented in a way that feels elevated but honest.

Styling matters too. I love mimicking the look of black and white film, the softness, the contrast, the timeless quality. I adore shooting film, but it is not always cost effective when running a business, so I create that same natural, film inspired aesthetic digitally.

their little legs, their belly, the way mom leans in to kiss it.

The Howell family welcomed their sweet baby girl . We chose to do their newborn photos at their home in Newport Beach and it was the perfect space to document their first days at home together.

Their home had the kind of light that makes everything feel gentle. The tones were soft and neutral, which photographed beautifully and gave the entire gallery that timeless, film-like feel.

Mom wore a gorgeous neutral dress from Dôen, the kind of piece that feels feminine and dainty but effortless, and photographs so beautifully for an in-home lifestyle session. It added just the right amount of movement and texture.

The newborn stage is so short it almost feels unfair.

You spend months waiting… and then suddenly they’re here, and the days blur together. One minute they’re curled up and sleepy. Then they’re stretching out, growing out of newborn clothes, and the tiny features you swore would never change are already different.

Thats why I love documenting families in the comfort of their home. The space where love grows.

You don’t have to pack up the diaper bag. You don’t have to get out the door. You don’t have to worry about timing your baby’s mood around a drive or a location. You can stay home, take breaks, feed your baby, change diapers, and breathe.

As a Newport Beach newborn photographer, I’m always mindful of how vulnerable and exhausting this season can feel for moms. My job is to take away some stress , it’s to create something beautiful while you get to stay in the comfort of your own space, in your own rhythm with access to everything your newborn needs.

The result is always more natural, more meaningful, and more you when its in the same space you make memories in on the daily. It’s life as we want to remember it.

Because one day, this home won’t feel like the newborn days anymore. The nursery will change. The tiny swaddles will be packed away. The quiet moments on the bed, the way you held her, the way you looked at each other like you couldn’t believe she was real… will start to feel like a dream you almost forgot.

But these images will bring you back.

To the truth of it.

The tenderness. The exhaustion. The love.

The beginning of your family.

Extended Family Photos at Crystal Cove State Beach

When families book extended family photos at Crystal Cove, my goal is always the same: to create a full gallery that feels complete, not rushed.

We capture the classic full-group portraits, but we also take the time to document all the smaller groupings that matter just as much. Because years from now, you won’t just want the photo where everyone is standing in a line.

You’ll want Grandma hugging the grandkids. Cousins running together on the sand. Adult siblings laughing like they’re kids again. And each individual family unit having their own portraits, without needing to book a separate session.

One of the biggest concerns families have when booking an extended family session is whether they’ll still get enough photos of their own family. And that concern makes total sense. When you’re coordinating schedules, travel, outfits, and the effort of getting everyone there, you want it to feel worth it.

That’s why I always break the session down intentionally, so nothing gets missed. We photograph the full group, each individual family unit, each set of grandparents with the grandkids, the grandparents together, adult siblings together both with and without their kids, couples together, cousin photos of just the kids, sibling photos, parent and child portraits, individual portraits of each child, and a mix of candid moments throughout.

And while I always do my best to get everyone looking for the more “classic” portraits, my favorite images almost always end up being the candid ones. The in-between moments are the ones that bring the most joy later. I love when clients get their photos back and realize those are the images they cannot stop looking at, because they feel the most like them.

You’re not just getting one big group shot. You’re getting a full story.

Because the truth is, these are the photos your kids and grandkids will keep forever. And I want you to have them beautifully, fully, and in a way that feels like you.

If you’re planning family photos in Huntington Beach, sunset is one of my favorite times to photograph here. Those pastel skies, sometimes with the moon peeking through, always get me. I feel genuinely inspired every time. I also love how the light translates on skin tones, keeping everything creamy and soft while avoiding the harsh shadows that come with bright sun. I photograph Huntington Beach at all different times, including morning, midday, and even full afternoon sun, but sunset will probably always be my preference. It is the most consistent, the most flattering, and it gives me the freedom to shoot almost anywhere without fighting the light.

A lot of times clients assume you cannot make something beautiful from a flatter beach like Huntington without cliffs or rocks, but I actually see Huntington Beach as an open canvas. Families are usually pleasantly surprised when they get their gallery back and realize Huntington Beach is an incredible backdrop for family photos. It is one of the beaches in Orange County that gets overlooked, and it often stays less crowded than Laguna Beach or Newport Beach. It also gives kids so much more space to spread out, run, play, and explore, and with toddlers, we all know how helpful that openness can be. If you’ve been overlooking Huntington Beach for your family photos, this is your sign.

The Marshall family’s newborn session took place in their Newport Beach home, and it was the kind of calm, cozy morning that makes lifestyle newborn photos so special. We photographed a mix of moments throughout the spaces they’ll always remember from this season , a few on the porch, some in their living area, and the sweetest quiet images in their bedroom as they soaked in life with their first baby boy.
