Visiting the California coast with their sweet boy, Bo, the Scott family chose Montage Laguna Beach for their family session while spending time in Newport Beach, wanting to document this season together as they prepare to welcome another baby into the family. The cloudy coastal morning paired with the dramatic cliffs and layered textures of Laguna Beach created the dreamiest backdrop, giving the entire session a soft, timeless feel that Montage always photographs so beautifully with. Tanner and Maddie fully leaned into the slower pace of the morning with Bo, allowing space for genuine moments to unfold naturally along the shoreline and pathways overlooking the ocean. Montage Laguna Beach is always one of my favorite locations for family sessions because of the variety it offers from the coastal architecture and cliffside views to the textured beach below, all within one location.

This maternity session at Montage Laguna Beach was especially meaningful for Morgan and her daughters, Goldie and London, as they spent time in Laguna Beach waiting for the arrival of their twin boys and wanting to remember this special season before their family changes in such a big and beautiful way.

Staying at the Montage gave them the perfect setting to remember this chapter, with ocean views, soft light, coastal paths, and beach access all in one location.

Morgan carried such a calm presence throughout the session, while Goldie and London moved in and out of the frame in the sweetest way, close to their mom, playful one moment and quietly taking in the next, already holding that excitement that comes when younger siblings are about to arrive.

There is something especially meaningful about photographing older daughters before new babies arrive because these images quietly hold the final moments of one chapter before another begins. Soon, their family rhythm will shift with two newborn boys, two tiny cries, two bassinets, and an entirely new pace of life.

A few of my recent clients have asked me , “Does the time of day you shoot at the beach make that much of a difference?”

Heres my answer : The golden hour occurs from about half an hour before, until about an hour after sunrise in the morning, and then an hour before sunset, to about 20 to 30 minutes after the sun has gone down in the evening. When you shoot in this soft light the light is golden in colour and often changes colour from yellow, to orange to magenta. 
-The light is soft, i.e. no major contrast such as hard shadows and very bright highlights. 
-Colors are more exaggerated, the color of the light is far more emphasized, much more oranges, reds and magentas are visible in the scene.
It is for these reasons that photographers choose to shoot in the early morning or early evening, these times produce the most dramatic images.

Many of us were taught to shoot under bright sunlight, in the middle of the day, with the sun behind us. Sure, that can work, but you won’t get dramatic results every time, in many cases, your images will look very average. This is because light is harsh at this time of day.

So to many of you who are wondering, yes, the time of day can make a HUGE difference in the outcome of your photos.

This sweet mommy & me session took place in Laguna Beach at the Montage Resort . I just loved that baby Ronnie + Mom were both in neutral tones, really giving this session an airy crisp look along the ocean front, bringing out the blues in the ocean & sky . Plus how stinkin cute is little Ronnie & that smile?!
